I have wanted to remix “The Less I Know the Better” for a long time. The original already has one of those basslines you recognise in seconds, but it is the tension in Kevin Parker’s vocal that stays with me.
I kept the vocal and rebuilt the track around an Afro House groove at about 123 BPM. The drums roll harder, the low end is warmer, and there is more room around the words.
The result sits between two sides of what I play: the melodic pull of Tame Impala and RÜFÜS DU SOL, and the more percussive Afro House associated with artists such as Black Coffee, Keinemusik and Francis Mercier. Those names describe the part of a set where I would use it.
Two versions
The 3:07 radio edit gets to the song quickly. The 4:29 extended mix adds roughly 30 seconds of drums at the start, giving DJs more room to bring it into a house set. The extended download is a 24-bit WAV.
The remix is not on Spotify. My original releases are there, but this one lives on SoundCloud, YouTube and the BYAS download page.
I made the track in Thailand, where my sets move between clubs, rooftops, pool parties and open-air events. A familiar vocal can connect those settings, while the extended intro still gives me enough room to mix.
